Menopause Symptoms

by Stein Ove Stien

Menopause is an integral part of womens life; no women can avoid the ultimate consequences. It is one step in a long reproductive degenerative, aging process, which almost begins silently at the age of 40 or so. Declining levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone cause various changes, which eventually lead to menopause.

Menopause symptoms can vary from woman to woman; changing hormone levels can cause a variety of symptoms which may last from a few months to a few years or longer. Some women may feel the worse of it, yet some other may feel very less of it. One of the most noticeable changes that occur during the onset of menopause is visible changes in occurrence of periods. Many women experience less regular periods; some have a lighter menstrual flow than normal; others face a heavier flow and may bleed a lot for many days. Periods may occur less than 3 weeks apart or last more than a week. There may be slight spotting between periods. Women, who have had previous problems with heavy menstrual periods and cramps, will usually find marked relief from these symptoms, when menopause starts.

One more noticeable symptom is the repeated occurrences of hot flashes, which is sudden feeling of heat in the upper part or all of womans body. Face and neck become extremely flushed. Flashes can be as mild as a light instant blush or just very severe enough to wake her from a sound sleep (also called night sweats). Most flashes usually last between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. The most common visible effects are the occurrences of red blotches all over the body.

Menopause symptoms also include remarkable changes in the genital and bladder behavior. As the estrogen levels change, the genital area can get drier and thinner. The resultant dryness makes sexual intercourse more painful. Vaginal and urinary tract infections are also very common during this time. Other problems can make it hard enough to hold urine long enough to get even to the bathroom. Urine leaks also occur during exercise, sneezing, coughing, laughing, or running.
Sexual behavior also undergoes tremendous changes during menopause. Some women find that their feelings about sex change drastically with menopause. Some have marked changes to the vagina, such as dryness, that makes sexual intercourse very painful. Others feel freer and sexier after menopause relieved that pregnancy is no longer a real worry.
Sleep problems are more common during menopause. Some women may find it very hard to sleep at night- they may not fall asleep easily or may wake too early. Once woken from sleep, they may find it very to go to sleep again. Hot flashes may also wake them up very easily.

One of the most common menopause changes is the change in mood. This may cause a marked shift in moods, caused by stress, family changes such as children leaving home, or feeling tired. Depression is how ever not a cause of menopause.

Drastic changes in body characteristics are another symptom of menopause. Some women find that their bodies change around the time of menopause. Women tend to get fattier and skin tends to get thinner too. Memory lapses do occur very frequently. Some women feel acute joint and muscle stiffness during menopause. Regular exercises will help them to over come many of these problems. Menopause is irreversible and is the gift of nature; it needs to be accepted whole heartedly and life style adjusted accordingly to the situation.

Hair Loss - The Reasons

by Mike Jones

General

Hair is constantly going through cycles of growth, resting, shedding. When hairs that are lost are not replaced, or when more hair follicles go into the resting phase, hair loss becomes noticeable. While there is ongoing debate regarding hair loss reasons, the list below shows many of the common contributing factors:

Ageing

The period for hair loss is between the 20 and 50 years of age. Some individuals arrive at the advance stages of hair loss sooner than others although it becomes increasingly evident as people advance in age.

Cosmetic Chemicals

Particularly bleaching, permanents, coloring.

Drugs/Medications/Radiation

Included are anticoagulants, antidepressants, contraceptive pills, amphetamines, some arthritis medications, some antibiotics, some blood thinners, medicines for gout, drugs derived from vitamin-A, certain drugs for ulcers, beta blocker drugs for high blood pressure. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy halt the growth phase of hair follicles which results in a sudden hair loss as those follicles all shed their hair at about the same time.

Heredity

Androgenetic alopecia is the term used to describe a genetic predisposition in men and women for pattern baldness or pattern hair loss. Although there is a dominant tendency for male pattern baldness, female members of a family can be transmitters as well.

Hormonal Imbalance

If the male and female hormones, androgens and estrogens, are out of balance, hair loss may result. Also an overactive or underactive thyroid gland can contribute to hair loss.

Illness and Severe Infections

These can include scalp fungal infections, Thyroid disorders, Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Diabetes, Lupus.

Immune System Disorder

Alopecia areata is an immune system disorder which causes hair follicles to stop producing hairs. Advanced forms of the disorder are identified by the terms alopecia totalis when all head hair disappears, and alopecia universalis which results in all body hair disappearing.

Menopause

Due to hormonal changes after menopause, some women find their hair begins to thin. There are a variety of treatments available involving hormone replacement therapy (HRT). There may be side effects in some cases and experimentation may be necessary under the guidance of a physician.

Poor Blood Circulation

Poor blood flow to the scalp, insufficient nutrients in the blood, or poor drainage of waste products through the lymphatic systems can all contribute.

Pregnancy

Three to six months after delivering a child, many women notice a degree of hair loss as the hair goes into a resting phase because of the physiological impact of the pregnancy on the body.

Pulling

Traction Alopecia is the term used to describe loss of hair from constant pulling, as with tightly braided hair styles such as pony tails. Also the improper use of curling tongs or rollers can tug the hair so it weakens.

Sebum Buildup

Sebum buildup in the follicles attacks the hair bulb, the rounded area at the end of a hair strand which is rooted in the follicle. Sebum causes the hair bulb to shrink so the hair is not as well rooted. After the hair falls out the new hair strand growing in that follicle is weaker and thinner and the process is repeated until the hair follicle is so damaged it dies. (Sebum is a fatty substance secreted from the sebaceous glands most of which open into hair follicles.)

Stress and Nervous Disorders

Telogen Effluvium is the term used for a slowing down of new hair growth because of sudden or severe stress. The stress triggers a large number of hair follicles to enter the resting stage, so a few months after the stressful event, those follicles shed hair at about the same time.

Prepare Well for Perimenopause and Menopause

by Michelle Gluth

Menopause is a natural life transition experience by every woman in the world. Today, more women are experiencing perimenopause and menopause than ever before. Still, the change is spoken of in whispers (if at all) and most women continue to approach this time of life with fear, confusion and dread. Its time to Embrace The Change!

Theres so much information on perimenopause and menopause available on web sites and in books. Unfortunately, much of it is inaccurate, outdated and downright dangerous. When your health and the quality of your life are at hand, how do you know what advice to follow? First, decide between synthetic hormone replacement therapy and a natural approach to symptom relief. This is a personal choice, hopefully made after plenty of research.

Empower yourself with knowledge. This isnt your mothers menopause! While this transition might be natural, the world isnt such a natural place anymore and your endocrine system has had to adapt accordingly. Chemicals and xenoestrogens in our products, foods and the environment have made this the first generation to experience the symptoms of extreme estrogen dominance. As a result, perimenopause (preceding actual menopause) can span up to 15 years or more of your life. Are you prepared?

Perimenopause and menopause unfold in two distinctly different phases. Each phase has unique symptoms (with only a few common to both) and each requires a different approach. Many allopathic and alternative doctors dont yet differentiate between the symptoms of estrogen dominance and estrogen deficiency. The one pill fits all approach might help relieve symptoms temporarily, but it wont address their cause or create healthy hormonal balance. A holistic approach, on the other hand, creates comprehensive wellness in body, mind and spirit.

By now, were well aware of the health risks associated with HRT. The medications thought to bring symptom relief and protect us from hormone related health concerns, were found to do more harm than good. But, did you know that the same can be true with natural remedies? The supplements, foods and herbs used to relieve the symptoms of menopause, can actually make you feel worse and be dangerous during the long phase of perimenopause. If youve decided on a natural approach to symptom relief, please proceed with caution. One herb doesnt fit all!

The 15 Steps to Embrace The Change provides a basic outline to assure you of a safe and natural midlife transition. Experience perimenopause and menopause as a positive time, rich with opportunities for enhanced health and happiness. Embrace The Change!

15 Steps to Embrace The Change!

1. Uncover the myths. Become aware.

Menopause is not a disease to be treated with medication! Know what to expect, when to expect it and how to safely and effectively create balance and harmony for the months and years ahead.

2. Follow current, accurate information.

A great deal of information in books and on web sites is inaccurate, outdated and downright dangerous. Follow advice with extreme caution. Theres more to know than you might think!

3. Recognize your symptoms as normal.

The Holistic Menopause Symptoms and Signs Checklist will help you identify your symptoms. This empowering step motivates positive action.

4. Identify estrogen dominance or estrogen deficiency.

Make this distinction before choosing supplements, foods or herbs. Identify the symptoms of both phases to adjust your protocol accordingly. This step is essential to your safety!

5. Eliminate the possibility of hormone related health conditions.

Undiagnosed health conditions are common in midlife. Their symptoms mimic and intensify your normal symptoms and put you at risk for developing more serious conditions later.

6. Assure your safety. Check for contraindications.

Dont miss this step if you have existing health conditions and/or use medications. Check for contraindications before adding supplements, herbs and foods. Never stop using medications without consulting your doctor.

7. Choose the best approach for your symptoms and life circumstances.

Choose the natural products that guarantee the biggest bang for your buck. Be sure they are absorbable and free of unnecessary preservatives, chemicals and fillers.

8. Make appropriate dietary changes.

Small dietary changes make a big difference. What you do and dont eat has huge implications.

9. Establish proactive preventative health strategies.

Heart disease and osteoporosis are the silent symptoms of menopause and post menopause. Begin preventative health strategies NOW. The quality of the rest of your life depends on it.

10. Initiate positive change. Choose clean products and foods.

Examine your personal care products and foods for chemicals. Eliminate all products containing endocrine disruptors. They tax your liver, aggravate your symptoms and cause disease.

11. Utilize effective stress management techniques.

Hormone fluctuations create a sensitivity to stress. Stress aggravates every symptom. Reducing stress and managing it well will greatly ease your menopause transition. Nows the time!

12. Prepare well.

In perimenopause, symptoms are constantly changing. What brought you relief one month just might not the next. Be prepared with alternatives and ready to make frequent changes.

13. Go inward, rest and restore.

After years of putting the needs and desires of everyone and everything before your own, its time to take care of YOU now. Time to rest has never been more important.

14. Listen to your symptoms.

Everything you have put on the back burner will surface in midlife. Stored resentments, unhealed wounds, losses ~ they all demand your attention now. Learn to listen to your symptoms. Anger, anxiety, depression, a lack of sexual desire ~ they all have a message for you.

Menopause - Don't Fear It - Beat It

by Debbie Lombardino

Night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings, brain fog, weight gain, itchy skin, no sex drive and feeling just plain nuts....is this menopause? This rural Missouri woman took this "bull by the horns" and took control!

Menopause is the condition caused by the slowing and eventual shut down of the reproductive system in conjunction with the decline of other hormones in the endocrine system. Forty years ago, menopause was the "change of life"; that period of time when a woman was considered middle aged. With modern technology we live longer and the old definition of middle age no longer holds true. Menopause however, still strikes women as early as 40 and sometimes earlier. Common causes for early menopause are genetics, physical traumas and extended use of certain medicines.

When surgery and prolonged use of steroids threw her into full blown menopause (she didn't pass GO - she didn't collect $200), this 45 year old did what most red blooded American women would do; saw her doctor who prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT). A year later and still feeling like she was having an out of body experience, the only medical alternative offered by her physician was to increase the dosage of HRT. Since finding that one of the drugs was made from pregnant mare urine, this wasn't an option and she started researching menopause, its cause and effects.

After two years of research and being her own guinea pig, she developed a system of natural health and fitness that works. Her program encompasses nutrition, natural supplements and a very do-able exercise routine. She calls her program Together We Can Do It and says it's unique - developed for Real Women by a Real Woman. Her 7-DVD exercise routine follows she and a friend from Day 1 to Day 30. They start out from being barely able to bend over to being more fit and flexible. She also includes her booklet detailing her research and findings, a handy exercise wall chart, a 30-day calendar to keep you motivated and a Before & After Chart to outline your progress. This spunky grandmother questioned the medical system which so quickly and readily prescribes harmful chemicals and took her health in her own hands. Today she's not only healthy and happy but 22 pounds lighter thanks to her program.

Debbie Lombardino has authored a booklet detailing her two year research of menopause - its cause and effects. She used her findings to develop a very unique fitness program directed at pere-menopausal and menopausal women ages 35-65. Ms. Lombardino continues to help women attain health through fitness by lecturing and spreading the word about responsible, natural health.

Is There Really A Male Menopause Or Is It Just A Myth?

by Gregg Hall

Many men experience many emotional health changes as they reach middle age. Many have revelations that many aspirations from earlier on in life were not quite what he expected. He may begin to feel like there isn't anything to look forward to anymore in his life. Many women state they can tell their partner is experiencing a change in life, though the fact is it is probably a psychological change rather than a physiological one.

Today, many men believe they should have the ability to maintain the same sexual performance that they did at a younger age. They expect the routine will be the same, and with little complications, from foreplay and erections to ejaculation and orgasm. Of course things change, and most bodily functions (such as sex drive) vary from day to day, so the probability that they will not live up to this standard is likely. In fact, many men especially middle age men believe they are underachieving, sexually speaking.

It is essential for both men and their partner to realize that sexual performance varies, occasionally. There are no set standards when it comes to sex, and both parties should understand that, and not have expectations. A considerate and sympathetic partner is very beneficial to potency continuation in the male.

The male testosterone is crucial in male development. Beginning in the mid-forties, serum testosterone levels tend to decline as age increases. Another thing, which declines, is the weight and size of the testicles. In fact, when compared with 30 something year olds, 70 year old males are generally expected to have about 50 percent of the testosterone concentration.

Almost all older men still have a normal range of serum testosterone levels, though. In men who demonstrate a variety of levels in erectile ability, testosterone levels usually fall within normal range. This indicates that testosterone itself is not generally a cause of impotence, though I can cause a lack of sexual interest.

Scientists may disagree about male menopause, but when it comes to middle aged men, very few doubt that it does, in fact, exist though the term menopause is actually a misnomer when it is applied to men. Women's ovaries shut down during menopause, and men's reproductive glands do not. Male menopause is gradual, and not universal, while female menopause is quicker and pretty much inevitable. Women experience a sudden decline in estrogen, and men only lose about .5% of testosterone annually (beginning around age 40), and rarely reach a level below what is considered healthy. It also does not affect fertility.

Men do have some symptoms of menopause, but it seems to be less biology, and more lifestyle. This is when their habits (smoking, fatty foods etc) catch up with them, they feel vulnerable, realize life is not infinite, and have problems coping. This can result in impotence, muscle loss, depression and stress (which can also inhibit testosterone release).

After Bleeding Menopause Vaginal

Eliminate Perimenopause and Menopause Symptoms

by Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

Perimenopause and Menopause is the natural cycle of a woman's life. Menopause it is the stopping of periods or menses. The average age is 52, however, menopause can occur in the 30's or 60's. The perimenopausal or menopause phase in a woman's life can be dramatic or quite simple it is different for every woman but every woman does stop having periods. Some people call it adolescence in reverse a rocky time with fluctuating hormones and emotions. Perimenopause is typically two to five years before, but sometimes women have symptoms ten to 15 years before stopping their periods. When symptoms arise at a young age it is called early menopause.

Perimenopause and Menopause symptoms include, but not restricted to:

Hot flashesa sudden sensation of intense body heat, often with profuse sweating and reddening of the head, neck, and chest. These symptoms can occur with mild to severe heart palpitations, anxiety, irritability and, rarely, panic. Hot flashes are the most common symptom of a woman's changing estrogen levels around the time of the last menstrual period (menopause).

 Breast tenderness

 Worsening of premenstrual syndrome

 Decreased libido (sex drive)

 Fatigue

 Irregular periods

 Vaginal dryness; discomfort during sex

Urine leakage when coughing or sneezing

Urinary urgency (a pressing need to urinate more frequently)

 Mood swings

 Difficulty sleeping

While some women will never experience hot flashes, others begin having them in their 30s. Hot flashes are most frequent and intense during the first two years of post-menopause, when estrogen levels have dropped below a certain point. Sleep patterns usually improve within 6 to 12 months after hot flashes begin.

Irregular periods are common and normal during perimenopause. But, other conditions can cause abnormalities in menstrual bleeding. If any of the following situations apply to you, see a naturopath to rule out other causes:

periods are very heavy, or accompanied by blood clots.

periods last several days longer than usual.

 spotting between periods.

 spotting after sex.

 periods occur closer together.

Potential causes of abnormal bleeding include hormonal imbalances, birth control pills, pregnancy, fibroids, blood clotting problems or, rarely, cancer.

The metaphysical way to eliminate perimenopause and menopause symptoms requires one to change thought processes about oneself in the scheme of life, replacing those thoughts with positive affirmations

I now take charge of my mind and my life. I am a powerful, dynamic woman! Every part of my body functions perfectly. I love me. I am balanced and peaceful in all changes of cycles, and I bless my body with love.

In addition to changing self-defeating thoughts, dietary changes provide significant relief for peri- and menopausal symptoms.

It is a known fact that Japanese women tend to suffer with menstrual symptoms or hot flashes only about 1/3 as often as American women. Women on vegetarian diets also complain of hot flashes far less than women who eat meat. Of course, you dont have to give up those steaksbut doctors and nutritional professionals suspect that the difference is largely due to the use of soy products in the diets of these women, and many women have realized that by incorporating some soy in their diets, their menstrual symptoms and menopausal symptoms have abated considerably.

Other important supplements are:

Flaxseed: High in phytoestrogens (especially lignans), flaxseed also is high in omega-3 fatty acids -- a key helper in fighting heart disease. And, like soy, its a good all-round helper in your body. Its high in phytoestrogens, flaxseed can help minimize symptoms like hot flashes. Studies have shown that it can help lower LDL (the bad) cholesterol. Studies have shown that it helps fight breast cancer and other cancers. It can help prevent heavy bleeding -- a common symptom when youre first beginning to enter premature menopause and going through erratic periods. Because its high in omega-3 acids, it help ease symptoms like breast tenderness, cramping, and other PMS-like discomfort.

Red Clover (available under the brand name Promensil) is another phytoestrogen high in bioflavonoids. Like other phytoestrogens, red clover has been shown to reduce hot flashes, help fight osteoporosis, and generally minimize other menopausal symptoms. But there have recently been other studies that found that it wasn't as helpful as initially believed. As with so many other supplements, the jury is still out.

Vitamin E and Citrus Bioflavonoids: This combination is a hot-flash buster -- with studies showing that taking these two supplements together helps combat hot flashes. 400 IUs of Vitamin E along with 1200 mg of bioflavonoids taken in the morning and again before bedtime has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes. (One note: Vitamin E isnt safe for everyone. If you have rheumatic heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, or take digitalis drugs, Vitamin E can be harmful. So be sure to check with your naturopath about the appropriate dosage.)

One study (conducted in the 1960s. . . unfortunately there have been few more recent studies) found that, after only one month, over 50 percent of the 94 participating women taking 1200 milligrams of bioflavonoids along with 1200 milligrams of Vitamin C stopped having hot flashes completely and another 34 percent had a drop in hot flash frequency and intensity. Studies have also shown that bioflavonoids also help relieve moodiness, anxiety, irritability and other emotional side effects of menopauseand can help fight vaginal dryness. Vitamin E helps with vaginal dryness (you can use it as a vaginal suppositoryput the capsule in your vagina.)

Vitamin A or Beta Carotene: If youre suffering from vaginal drynessor if youve noticed a change in your skin texture, a drying or loss of elasticity, Vitamin A or beta carotene can help. Vitamin A (which is what beta carotene converts to in your body) helps maintain tissues, skin, and mucous membraneshelp fight against vaginal dryness and skin changes that often come with low estrogen levels.

B-Vitamins: This family of vitamins helps in coping with premature menopause, both in terms of helping combat symptoms and fighting negative long-term risks. B vitamins can keep your energy levels up; support your liver function ( a definite plus if youre on HRT, as oral estrogen is broken down by your liver); prevent vaginal dryness; increase your resistance to infection; help maintain your adrenal gland function -- which is where the precursor to estrone (the form of estrogen still produced by your body after menopause) is produced. B vitamins are considered stress fighters -- so can help you to deal with the emotional symptoms that crop up during premature menopause such as: anxiety, irritability, mood swings, even insomnia. In addition, if youre on HRT, its a good idea to be sure youre getting B-vitamins either through your diet (whole grains, beans and brewers yeast are all good sources of B vitamins) or in a multi-vitamin or B-complex supplement, since studies have shown that HRT may cause a deficiency in B2, B12, B6 and Biotin.

Calcium: A definite must to help prevent osteoporosis, calcium can also help lower blood pressure, reduce triglyceride levels (that sometimes rise in women on some forms of HRT.) Magnesium: Magnesium is a very important calcium helper -- and also helps fight the crashing fatigue that often comes at the beginning of premature or early menopause by boosting energy levels. Potassium: helps boost energy. It regularizes your heart beat, which can help if you get palpitations -- a fairly common symptom of menopause. In addition, it can help you cope with water retention and bloating, both of which are side effects with certain forms of HRT, particularly progestins such as Provera.

Black Cohosh: helps cut down on hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms, it help with cramps, heavy periods and other menstrual irregularities. Studies conducted using black cohosh have shown that it appears to be quite effective, especially for hot flashes. And some researchers believe it may help prevent osteoporosis and reduce bone resorption, although no long-term studies conducted on humans have substantiated this.

Chasteberry (Vitex agnus castus): This (like black cohosh) appears to act like a progesterone and has been used in Europe for many years to alleviate PMS symptoms as well as menopausal symptoms. It may help diminish both LH and FSH and appears to affect your pituitary function. Different studies have found that it reduced menopausal symptoms, particularly hot flashes and irregular bleeding. It is helpful for breast tenderness, primarily because chasteberry suppresses prolactin production. Typically, it takes about three to four weeks to notice results. One note, however: While chasteberry is widely used in Europe, there have been no double-blind placebo studies conducted on it.

Evening Primrose Oil: A good source of GLA (gamma linoleic acid), evening primrose oil has been used by many women to help fight PMS symptoms -- many of which are the same as menopausal symptoms. Its a good bet to help prevent bloating, water retention, breast tenderness, cramps and vaginal dryness.

St. Johns Wort or Sam-E: If youre finding yourself more easily depressed, St. Johns Wort or Sam-E may help. Widely touted as a natural tranquilizer, this herb helps relieve irritability, depression, and fatigue. Over 23 different studies have found that its effective in fighting depression -- when hormone levels plunge suddenly.

Kava Kava: Helps in reducing anxiety, fighting depression, and leveling mood swings, kava kava has been shown to be quite effective. One recent study found that women with menopausal symptoms taking 100 mg of kava kava three times a day reported a difference after only one week.

Valerian: If youre suffering from insomnia, a common symptom, valerian helps. Its used widely in Europe to treat sleep disturbances, as well as for nervousness and menstrual problems. Its also known as an anxiety reliever -- so may help with mood swings and tension.

Altering your diet in small ways can have the greatest positive effect on your body. Include plenty of low-fat, high-fiber foods in your diet.

One of the most commonly complained about symptoms of menopause is the weight gain that seems to come along with it. Put simply, your body isnt burning calories in the same way it once was, so if you dont change your dieteven if its already a healthy one youre bound to gain a few pounds around the waist. Changing your diet now, simply by avoiding a few foods that are bound to make other symptoms worse, while increasing the foods high in certain vitamins while remaining low in calories, will help you to maintain your figure while giving your body the nutrients it needs to fight off the worst symptoms of menstruation or menopause.

For instance, foods high in potassium, including most fruits, will help you keep your mind sharp while promoting healthy water flushing throughout your body (which will reduce cramps and bloating), while keeping your muscles and bones lubricated and strong including your needy joints and your thinning vaginal walls. In short, this is the time in your life when an apple a day couldnt ring more true!

Oily fish--including salmon, tuna, and vegetable oils, are often recommended by nutritionists for anyone wanting to keep their minds sharp. But these oils are also useful in helping keep your muscles from drying, while helping your digestive system.

Everything from Vitamins C and E to herbal remedies such as Dong Quai and Wild Yam Root are superior to abating the menstrual and menopausal symptoms than any pharmaceutical. You can explore the countless ways in which these small changes or additions to your diet will not only combat the unique symptoms youre going through, but the ways in which you can identify these symptoms quickly to lead a healthy life during your menstrual years and long after menopause.

Soy is a mystery to most Americans. Many of us would buy a chunk of tofu, which, lets face it, is somewhat tasteless. However, you dont need to move to Japan to figure out how to add it to your diet. You dont need to give up eating cheeseburgers to enjoy the occasional veggie burger, but adding some soy to your diet has abated the negative symptoms of menstruation and menopause for millions of women. If youve not eaten many soy products, dont turn up your nose yetin addition to abating your negative menstrual, peri- or menopause symptoms, you may find that you actually like it! Not to mention soy is a lot less expensive compared to prescriptions, surgery and negative aftereffects.

You will feel better if you do things that enhance your general well-being, such as:

 Exercise.

Use relaxation techniquesbreathing-for-relaxation exercises or meditation, yoga, and biofeedback.

 Stop smoking if you smoke.

Get more sleep as-well-as going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day.

 Decrease the amount of alcohol.

Drink only decaffeinated tea/coffeestay away from hot drinks if you have severe hot flashes, youre not giving your body reason to heat up and produce a hot flash.

Eliminate carbonated beveragesReplacing with water and juice will keep your bones and muscles well-lubricated, prevent osteoporosis from settling in, and temper your general aches and pains.

Get to a healthy weight and maintain it.

Drink at least eight glasses of water each dayDrink cold beverages rather than hot

Dress in layers, so you can remove clothes as needed.

Wear natural fabrics, such as cotton and silk.

Keep the room temperature cool or use a fan. You're more likely to have a hot flash in a warm environment than in a cool one.

 Sleep with fewer blankets.

Eat smaller, more frequent meals to avoid the heat generated by digesting large amounts of food.

Causes of Sleep Disorders

by Seth Miller

Each sleep disorder has various causes. The most common causes of sleep disorder are chronic fatigue syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, menopause, stress, anxiety, postpartum depression, and congestive heart failure.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by a sense of fatigue that comes suddenly but never stops. Doing normal activities becomes very difficult. CFS does not occur due to excessive activity or for any other obvious reason. Episodes of depression also accompany this syndrome, which causes sleeplessness.

Post-traumatic stress disorder follows a tragedy or any horrifying event. When persons witness murders or huge accidents, they have recurring images of the scene running in their minds. They feel traumatized even if they were not part of the event. This leads to mental tension, hysteria, and lack of sound sleep due to possible nightmares. Meditation and short-term sleep medication are possible relievers.

Women nearing or having reached menopause are anxious of their possible risk factors of cancer and other ailments. Some women suffer from complications that hinder their ability to sleep peacefully. Excessive bleeding and pelvic pain are causes of sleep disorders.

Stress and anxiety are known causes of sleep disorders. Deadlines, impending work pressure, marital discord, separation, and death are factors that lead to stress and anxiety. Worrying about issues at night leads to drowsiness and lack of concentration.

Postpartum depression involves a range of emotional feelings that new mothers experience following delivery. Bouts of depression and postpartum psychosis are sometimes witnessed in new mothers. They lack sleep due to the fatigue, pain, and joy experienced after giving birth. The mixed feelings tend to create a depressive mood.

Congestive heart failure is a disease where the heart function declines due to the improper pumping of blood. This leads to pain and discomfort in the chest area, making the person remain awake at night.

In children, sleep disorders occur due to nightmares, pain, constipation, anxiety and stress.

Whatever the causes, a soothing touch and proper medication would help the patients enjoy a good nights sleep.
